Comprehensive Eye Examinations

When we do eye exams, we refuse to cut corners. We always schedule ample time so you will never feel rushed. We provide complete eye care for both adults and children. We keep all of our records electronically to avoid the errors and inconvenience that accompany paper records. This state of the art electronic health record allows our diagnostic instruments "talk" to each other, preventing transcription errors and speeding the exam process, thus permitting Dr. Murphy and Dr. Gunderson to spend more time discussing your eye health and vision correction options. All eye exams are NOT the same. Our comprehensive eye examinations have FOUR PHASES. In Phase I we will collect and review your health history to ensure we play an active role on your health care team. Phase II is a check of your vision, including your depth perception, color vision, visual acuity and functional vision. Your visual skills and abilities are carefully evaluated and we pride ourselves on the accuracy of our eyeglass prescriptions. During Phase III, our doctors will evaluate your eyes inside and out for dry eye, eyelid disease, glaucoma, cataracts and all other eye diseases as well as high blood pressure, diabetes and other systemic diseases. In Phase IV, our doctors and staff work together to provide you with a recommendation for current treatments and a plan to ensure healthy sight for you in the future.

Technology is rapidly changing the eye care industry. We utilize the latest in diagnostic equipment and are committed to keeping up with whatever advances will come next. We have digital imaging for the cornea, scanning laser technology for the retina, nerve fiber analysis for the optic nerve and early glaucoma detection, and the latest instruments for determining your candidacy for laser surgery.

Contact Lenses

We have been fitting specialty contact lenses for years and have seen some incredible changes in that time. We now use a highly sophisticated instrument, a corneal topographer, that provides our doctors with a digital map of the front surface of your eye, allowing us to most accurately fit contact lenses. Another exciting change in the last few years has been the availability of new contact lens materials that make it safe to wear contact lenses longer, sometimes even overnight!

Disposable contact lenses are the mainstay of our practice. We carry thousands of diagnostic lenses in stock and 90% of our patients can leave the office with contact lenses on the day of their appointment. We pride ourselves on working extensively with our patients to ensure that they are in the healthiest and most comfortable lens materials available. We also inventory some of our most popular brands so you will have the convenience of leaving our office with your annual supply in hand!

Rigid contact lenses are a specialty lens within the industry providing the clearest most crisp vision available. These lenses will provide unsurpassed vision for those with high prescriptions, astigmatism, or those needing bifocal contact lenses. Fitting these speciality lenses is truly an art, and our Doctors are our artists. The gas-permeable lens materials available today far surpass those available just a few years ago in terms of eye health and comfort.

Dr. Murphy also has the latest offering in specialty contact lenses used to treat eye conditions such as keratoconus and other corneal diseases. For those who need contact lenses after refractive surgery, Dr. Murphy is skilled in fitting these special lenses. We offer the latest technology in contact lenses, including the newest hybrid contact lens; Synergeyes Lenses, now available in a multifocal design. Dr. Murphy has been extremely successful at fitting the Synergeyes A lens for many patients who require correction for astigmatism, bringing a truly innovative product to the Colorado Market. She also fits the Synergeyes Multifocal, Synergeyes for Keratoconus, and Synergeyes for Post Surgical Patients. Soon to be available are the ClearKone lens and a new silicone hydrogel hybrid lens.

Front Range Eye Associates also has a full selection of colored contact lenses and costume lenses, perfect for occasional or full-time wear. Daily disposable lenses are a growing segment of the contact lens market and perform very well in Colorado's dry climate. These lenses are also perfect for the individual that may wear lenses periodically for special occasions, camping, biking, hiking and skiing.

Our optical laboratory is able to provide you with any frame or lens design available. Laser Vision Correction

Everyone is talking about refractive or laser surgery. Our doctors will help you determine if refractive surgery is the right choice for you. While many people have had LASIK, Drs. Murphy and Gunderson can also direct you to other surgical options based on your particular condition. Our doctors specialize in co-managing Bladeless Intralase LASIK, Custom Wavefront Procedures as well as PRK, PhotoRefracive Keratectomy and Advanced Surface Ablation.

The "Wow!" effect of refractive surgery is the very rapid recovery of vision and the decreased level of discomfort post-operatively. You hear from people that they did not feel anything, and could see well the very first day. Most people have functional vision in 48 hours. Although this is true in some cases, it must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, continues to improve for some weeks, even months.

Everyone's eyes are different. Even though you may have a friend who has had LASIK, this does not mean it is right for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right surgeon, procedure and laser appropriate for you. For many of you who are long-term contact lens wearers, our pre-operative input can make the difference between an excellent result and a mediocre one.

Post-operatively we can monitor your eyes and taper medications to arrive at the best possible result. After all, no one knows your eyes better than your optometrist.

Surgery Co-Management

Our office provides co-management for many surgical services such as cataract surgery, laser surgery, refractive surgery, retina-vitreous procedures, oculo-plastic procedures (lid lifts), cosmetic procedures (Botox and Restylane) and strabismic surgery. We offer this in conjunction with a specifically selective group of ophthalmic surgeons.

For our cataract surgery patients, we offer premium intra-ocular lens implants such as AcrySof Toric IOL and the new Tecnis Multifocal IOL.

Our team of specialists to whom we refer includes:

Kevin Cuevas, M.D, anterior segment specialist

Michael McCracken, M.D.,  oculoplastic-specialist

Dry Eyes and Allergies

Dry Eyes: Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and gritty feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluation of the amount of tears on the front of the eye and from review of your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears; eye drops for treating allergies; topical (Restasis) and oral eye medications created specifically for dry eye, and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals. Colorado is a wonderful state to live in, but dry eye is a very common consequence of this beautiful environment and altitude.

Do you think you might have dry eye? Click here to complete an online questionnaire and be prepared to discuss the results at your next appointment.

Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes

Allergies: Ocular allergies affect many of our patient but can be particularly annoying to contact lens wearers. In the past many people had to quit wearing their lenses for a month or two during the allergy season. New lens materials and allergy medications have made it possible for these people to eliminate itchy eyes. These medications are amazingly effective and safe even in children .

Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision. See above for more detailed information.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.

Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.

Corneal Reshaping

Dr. Gunderson is skilled in corneal reshaping therapy.  This cutting edge technique involves wearing contact lenses overnight to reshape the cornea, allowing for excellent vision without the need for contacts or glasses during the day.  Dr. Gunderson utilizes and is certified in the Paragon CRT system.

Eye Emergencies

Our office provides emergency services for eye infections and eye injuries.

Please call our office at 303.951.1820

During office hours and our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. After hours you can be connected to our doctor on call by dialing the same number and choosing option #1. Better than a primary care office or emergency room for many superficial injuries and infections, our state of the art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.

Electronic Documentation & Communication

This provides our patience with the highest level of security for their personal health information, no charts to get lost! Your medical information is accessed only by privileged staff and our databases are backed up remotely offsite every day.  This health information is efficient and accurate and can be easily transferred to your Personal Heath Record (PHR), when the government mandates, or other providers allowing instantaneous access.

ePrescribing: ePrescribing allows us to electronically transfer your medical prescriptions to the pharmacy of your choice providing automatic verification of drug interactions, allergies and insurance formularies. Doing so ensures accuracy and BEST OF ALL reduces your wait time at the pharmacy.

eClaims: Your insurance claims are processed immediately upon your departure.  Timely filing of claims with correct coding streamlines your visit and lowers costs.  You may not have to stop by the business office after your consultation.
